Cruising from Puerto Rico

When it’s April Vacation and all vacation prices have increased why not try cruising. This year we decided to try something different. We flew to Puerto Rico and embarked on a cruise from Puerto Rico, through the Caribbean, ending in New York. I will talk about our time on the Norwegian Cruise Ship Epic in a later blog.

When visiting Puerto Rico you will find people there are so friendly, and you will also be able to enjoy the rich culture that is present everywhere you turn. The food is fantastic, and we even got to try some delicious local cuisine that I had never tasted before, Mofongo. We also learned that the Pina Colada originated there in 1963.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Isla Verde (below), and it was excellent. They had a complimentary breakfast, and the restaurant/pool bar was amazing. The hotel was conveniently located near a CVS and other amenities, making it easy for me to take care of our needs without going too far away. Also, for those with littles there is a Burger King two blocks down as well as an ice cream shop.

Old San Juan was a beautiful place that we visited, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the old fort and shopping area. We took an Uber to get there, and it was a safe and friendly ride. I know sometimes people are hesitant to take Ubers in new places but it was clean, accommodating, and cheaper than most taxi's. The driver also shared some information about the island's history during the journey, which was quite enlightening. He lived there his entire life and brought us to some spots we otherwise would not have gone and also let us know about a protest that was taking place that day and what areas to avoid due to traffic. That being said, we also took a taxi ride back, which was equally friendly but less informative.

The cruise port in Puerto Rico was easy to get to and well-organized. I would highly recommend visiting Puerto Rico as well as cruising out of there. Overall, it was an amazing start to our trip, and I'm glad we had the chance to experience Puerto Rico, if only for two days. I will definitely be going back to experience the island more and to see the beaches.

I hope you get to visit Puerto Rico soon and have a wonderful time like we did. And when you are ready to book, remember Pixie Travelers for all your travel needs.
